Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay System for the First Time.

The Championships court with video review technology

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in implementing video review systems.

Video review technology are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players will gain the right to question specific calls made by the chair umpire, echoing the system already in use at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This innovation is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move comes just a year after the AELTC implemented ELC, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to review other decisions, including:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Possible interference end of a point.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a player can initiate.

Practical Application

A recent incident occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, granting the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews are not new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its events.

Further Updates

Another change at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where spectators have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly 100 days to go until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
